Embrace Emptiness with Meditation

 



Once a large project or undertaking is over, it is natural to feel empty. It may also occur after a major goal has been achieved, a long journey, a sudden reduction in responsibilities on retirement or when a child leaves for college. In such times, it is natural to feel empty and we generally fill this emptiness by turning to food, television, or other substitutes which do not fill the emptiness.              

Under such circumstances, it is best to start meditating. The feeling of emptiness will soon pass. Leaving us in the emotional space to pick up a more wholesome next step. Meditation is a long-term investment in emotional stability.  Have you tried watching your breath? When we observe our breath, we can see air coming out in a straight line (exhale) from our nose. or we may feel that air is being sucked in through our nostrils (inhale). The little boy says," When I watch my breath, I see it entering and leaving my nose just like my dad's car entering and leaving the garage". It's a tremendous feeling.  Everyone thinks, that what I am saying is right, " I have well reasoned it out. It is based on facts and figures." But then why do some people differ from us? Sometimes this difference of opinion leads to heated arguments. In extreme cases, it may lead to riots and arsenal. Also, some people live in perpetual fear of the unknown. Fear is an emotion generated from within. We have to learn to manage it.

The nature of thought and purple elephants

 If you tell your mind, not to think about Purple Elephants, it will think about Purple elephants. This is the nature of the mind. Therefore, the thoughts cannot be transcended with the mind. Meditation is beyond the mind. Just return to your breathing. The Pink elephant will move on on its own. 



If you tell yourself, I will be still, your mind with now chatter about being still. If you really want to be still, particularly when moments of emotional intensity have engulfed you, strengthen your practice.
